I'm listening for overall "thickness" and how consistent my playing dynamics are while I dial it in. Please don't feel ripped off because you bought the pedal and it "only sounds good with 10% on the control, why bother." This really is not a pedal to dime any controls on. I use a buffer pedal to set a consistent level into my pedalboard. The CS-3 has a relatively low threshold, you may need a lower input volume on humbucker guitars.
